Google’s Gmail

According to TG Daily:

Taking a page out of Apple’s book, Google is now urging Gmail users to drop Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) in favor of Firefox or Chrome that, according to the company, run the popular web-based email service “twice as fast.” Google also labels IE6 as an unsupported browser, meaning it fails to run some Gmail features.

I had read about Google doing this earlier, but didn’t think to add them. However a recent discussion on Slashdot (Google Tells Users To Drop IE6) had me reconsider.

Browse Sad of http://browsesad.com emails:

Force Internet Explorer 6 users to upgrade their browser by making their web browsing experience sad! 😉 –Browse Sad

I took a look at their script and it’s clever, using Microsoft’s filter extension to desaturate the content of your webpage (if viewed through IE6 that is).

Hi, I really like this website, and totally support you in your action. My blog is going the same way by blocking IE6… but even IE7 actually, as I hate pretty much all versions of IE 🙂

I even blog about it here :

Noodled Out

Preeti of Noodled Out says:

My food blog has been on and off for a few years now. Every time I make upgrades, I’m doing battle with IE special comments.

Screw it, if an IE6 user visits my site and can’t see things properly, it’s not my problem that IE never bothered to render CSS or anything else in a logical manner. By Jan 2009, I’ll just have humorous pages for IE6 users to upgrade their browsers to something else. –Preeti
