InstaPaper

From an email from Marco:

I’m happy to report that I no longer test Instapaper.com in IE6. I actually don’t know if I ever did, but I sure don’t now: since the site’s core functionality requires a bookmarklet installation, and IE makes bookmarklet installation so clunky and difficult, I don’t have the time to walk IE users through it. And recently I added AJAX features and rounded corners that, while they degrade to acceptable functionality, they definitely don’t work in IE (6 or 7), and I’m unwilling to spend any time to hack together equivalent functionality that’s IE-compatible. As an individual doing this in my free time, I can’t afford IE compatibility.

Instapaper’s IE users, therefore, just need to accept an inferior experience. Sorry, but it’s either that or no new Instapaper feature development at all. –Marco Arment

MySQLGame

mysqlgame is probably not displaying properly in IE. We suggest Firefox or another standards-compliant browser. We’re not trying to be jerks about it, it’s just there’s only so much time in the day to spend trying to defeat Microsoft, and we gave up. –http://mysqlgame2.appspot.com/

Youth With a Mission

Youth With a Mission – Montana says:

However, if you are using an older browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, you may notice things throughout the site which look a little “off.” Internet Explorer 6 was released in 2001, and has since been replaced by version 7. It is increasingly difficult for us to support version 6. –YWAMM

Daring Fireball

John Gruber and daringfireball.net doesn’t bother with Internet Explorer:

If Daring Fireball looks like shit in your browser, you’re using a shitty browser that doesn’t support web standards. Internet Explorer, I’m looking in your direction. If you complain about this, I will laugh at you, because I do not care. –John Gruber

Viewzi

http://viewzi.com – Does not code around IE6.

While Viewzi will probably work in Internet Explorer 6, we highly recommend that you upgrade your browser version. IE6 debuted in 2001, and is a dinosaur by technological standards. Newer browsers make for reliable development and safer browsing. –Viewzi

Apple’s MobileMe

Not entirely surprising considering those involved, but Apple’s latest web-based service, MobileMe, required “Safari 3, Internet Explorer 7, or Firefox 2 or later.” Apple is a high profile company, but not many others have the same savvy target market.

Know of any other company or web based service dropping IE6 support? Let me know.

37 Signals

37 Signals (the guys behind Rails, Basecamp, Backpack and more) dropped support for IE6 last week across their product line.

Oh, how liberating that must feel.

We *Like* Our Internet With a Side of Revolution

Internet Explorer 6 will be SEVEN years old on August 27th, 2008 will be EIGHT years old this fall. It came out a few weeks before the Twin Towers fell. It came out before the Nintendo GameCube. It came out before the first iPod.

It’s time to put a deadline on dropping IE6, and I say that time is now, and the deadline should be soon… say like, March 2009. That’s roughly a little more than 6 months. Feel free to join me. If your company is dropping support for IE6, let me know and I’ll gladly post it up. I’m also on twitter, http://twitter.com/sxtxixtxcxh, if that works better for you.

Check out the marching category to see who else is phasing out Internet Explorer 6.

If, for some reason, you’ve found yourself here using Internet Explorer 6, you can help yourself by downloading Firefox, Safari, Opera and/or Internet Explorer 7 (there’s a beta for IE8, if you’re feeling adventurous).

Google has recently gotten into the browser game, and (if you’re on Windows) you can download a beta of their unbelievably fast Chrome.

Update: IE 8 has been released. Are you going to support three different versions of Internet Explorer?
